What to Know About Suicide Awareness During the Holidays
While the holidays can be a cheerful time for some people, others experience sorrow and sadness during this time of year. Jodi Salvo brings Kristie Wilkin to the show, and Kristie has some incredible information regarding suicide awareness.
Kristie is a 3-time suicide survivor. She shares her experiences with suicides in her life. Now the facilitator for the Tuscarawas County Survivors of Suicide Support Group, Kristie explains her mission of helping anyone who is struggling with suicidal thoughts.
Going into the holiday season this year, it's important to realize that suicide rates are increasing in all age groups during COVID and this extended period of isolation. Kristie talks about warning signs and other indicators that you or a loved one may be dealing with mental illness. She also talks about the stigma of mental illness and why it's a barrier for many people to reach out for help. Kristie stresses that no one is immune to mental illness - in fact, we're all affected on different levels throughout our lives.
Remember - asking for help is NOT a sign of weakness; asking for help is a sign of self-awareness, and that is truly a strength.
